Good lecturer, in command of the facts. Appreciate her recommendations for further reading.
It's well done, but the subject gets a little boring after three or four chapters. We have never finished it after the 6th chapter.
Loved it! Even though I have an MA in history, I never thought I'd be able to listen to 36 lectures on medieval England. I was WRONG! Jennifer Paxton weaves a riveting story that has made my commute enjoyable for the past couple of weeks. Her vast expertise of the medieval English Church is on full display. I know Church history and I know medieval history but I've never heard them presented in such a brilliantly interconnected narrative. Paxton also does an excellent job of explaining the complicated relationship between England and France. Too often, we hear of the Norman Conquest and little else until the 100 years war. Not here. She expertly relates the struggle of English monarchs to retain control of Norman and Angevin lands as well as the struggle for the crown of England and France these complicated relationships precipitated. I wish I could listen to her take the narrative on through the present day!
A series of audio lectures by a professor at Georgetown University, Jennifer Paxton, who knows her subject matter very well and much more importantly can lecture the information in an interesting fashion. Her father is a famous folk singer, Tom Paxton, and she may have learned her verbal skills listening to him because her oral presentation consistently has the listener captured and interested. The subject matter is generally presented in chronological order with occasional side trips to examine everyday life in England during the time period under review. I think with this kind of material the ability of the lecturer to present the material is perhaps more important than content; if you can't bear to listen to the voice you won't learn the material. This is a rare combination of fascinating material so very well presented.
Really good series. Excellent lecturer. She really knows her subject and transmits her enthusiasm. The only reason I gave this lecture series only four stars is that it is very light on graphics and illustrations.
I purchased this title through the Audible App about 6 to 8 weeks ago and have twice listened to the enire course. On both occasions the course left me with the sensation that I had travelled back in time to be a contemporary eyewitness to these medieval events, rather than just a student looking back in time. The only way to have improved this course would have been to make it 50 hours in length.
Great information, easy to listen to
Very interesting and her delivery is well done and easy to follow. She is a good story teller of the material she covers. However, she is an obvious anglophile and her bias comes out when she speaks of the "English' as a tribe and addresses only their positive influence on civilization. No words about how controversial their violent methods, subjugation of other peoples etc., contributed to their obtaining a world empire. When she mentions the invasion of Ireland in the 1160s she omits to mention the long standing intention of Henry II to invade and his collusion with the English Pope - and refers only to the role that the deposed Irish king Diarmait Mac Murchada played. Many in the African nations, India, or in Ireland, thought little or nothing of the English and their 'civilization' and the violence used to hold down an unwilling empire.
